Book Publishing - Publish a Book

How to publish a Book

Steps to Getting a Book Published

Publishing your book can be one of the most important marketing projects that you ever undertake. No matter what the length of the book is, this can be a simple process as long as you understand the different steps that need to be taken. Without knowing these steps it can become overwhelming and hard to navigate. Work on following these 9 steps when looking to publish a book.

1.) You’ll never get anywhere if you don’t get organized. By working together, the editor and the writer should determine what type of book you want. While deciding this, also decide on the size of the book. After deciding, come up with a basic outline.
2.) Take the outline and use it as a subject guide for compiling your information. The information that you’ll want to get together includes articles, brochures and other resources that you’ll be using to explain topics in your book. Put together some type of folder for each different chapter and send them to your editor.
3.) Your editor generally acts as the person who will do the research to see what other people have to say about the writing subject. By getting references for your book, it will help with the credibility of your ideas. Make sure you work with two important elements when getting references, they have to be recent, and they must be sources that your audience will respect.
4.) The editor of the book will then work to come up with a chapter outline that will include rough copy ideas. During this process the editor should also be coming up with different page layout ideas.
5.) Go through the chapter outline and give the editor your personal thoughts. Remember that you as the writer need to be happy about this also. Then draw from the research and outline to produce a rough draft of the book. This is normally done in sections and not all at once.
6.) You’ll then go through the information and mark corrections that you’d like to see done. The editor will be the one to make the corrections, and then deliver another copy of the draft to you. Most of the time this is the final draft. You’ll then approve the final draft, and work to design the page and cover of the book.
7.) The next step is an important one- printers that are set up to print books will not print from a word processing program. All book printers work with programs like Quark ExPress and Aldus PageMaker. With that said, you’ll want to make sure that the final version of your book is transferred to the correct publishing program.
8.) Printers will then send you and the editor the blue lines for approval. These show exactly what the book will look like in its end product, and need to be approved by both you and the editor.
9.) The printer will then provide you with a final cost of the book. This is usually determined by the exact number of copies that you’d like. You’ll have to pay the printer, and then they will ship the books to you once they are done.

When going through these steps, don’t stress if you don’t have an editor. They are usually used, but if you don’t have one then you’ll just be doubling for both positions. Ultimately, the result will be clear and easy to read book that should be easy for your target market to understand.
